Looking for a fun kitchen task to do with your toddler? Try this drink that you can both share which not only tastes good but provides some immune boosting nutrients. Ginger and vitamin C have both been popular items during cold and flu season as they both provide antioxidants. Ginger can also help alleviate nausea, so if you are pregnant you can use this as a way to help combat morning sickness.
The ingredients of this drink are really simple, but you can also add many other flavors for variety and some fun. Many toddlers do not like the fizzy nose tickles that carbonate drinks give them, so you may leave those out and just stick to a more concentrated juice drink. However, if you and your child enjoy bubbly water, feel free to add a variety of flavored low-calorie options.
- Oranges and lemons for juicing (first zest the peels and save the zest to sprinkle over the drink or to use in other recipes; you can simply freeze zest in a small bit of water by freezing it in ice cube trays)
- Ginger simple syrup (you can purchase or make this; fresh ginger is best for making your own)
- Ice cubes
It is really that simple. Some optional additions include:
- IZZE sparkling juices are low in calories and light in flavor so are a great accompaniment to any mocktail.
- Cranberry or Hibiscus flower juices.
- Chopped oranges, sliced lemons, or ice cubes of zest (as detailed above).
- Chopped mint lends a refreshing mocktail accompaniment.
- All fruit popsicles of any flavor!
For our version below, we mixed up a deliciously frothy drink containing the following which made 2 adult (4 oz) and 1 child sized portion (2 oz), but you could increase or decrease as desired.
1 large Cara Cara orange, peeled and sliced (check for seeds)
1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger
1 Tbsp ginger syrup
1/2 cup crushed ice
1/2 cup cold filtered water
1 Tbsp low calorie agave nectar (sweetened to taste)
Cara Cara zest for serving
- First zest the orange. Then peel the orange and check for seeds. Next, add the slices to a blender.
- Wash, peel and grate your ginger. Add to blender.
- Add fruit popsicle of choice.
- Add ginger syrup, agave syrup, crushed ice and water to blender.
- Blend on high speed for 1-2 minutes.
- Pour into glasses of choice and top with the zest and other herbs as desired.
- Serve cold!
